Benefit film night on Ferguson: Touch the Sky

–English below–
Zaterdag 5 september vertonen we de nieuwe film Touch the Sky.

Saturday september 5th we show the new film Touch the Sky. The film tells the story of the uprising in Ferguson 2014 after the police murdered Michael Brown. The film is made completely of found footage, and gives a reconstruction of what happened and a critique of various institutes around it. The film doesn’t hide anything: neither that people who are racialized, poor or just angry take the opportunity to loot&light up a store, nor the same people then organize music on the streets and that there can be a good athmosphere.

Money collected this evening will go to a support fund for people arrested in the riots.

VRIJDAG 11 SEPT. 2020, 19.30 UUR

Benefit move night for Anarchist prisoner Gabriel Pomba da Silva

Saturday 11 juli 2020
Door open at 19:00 talk 19:30 start

Short talk about Gabriel and the decades long anti prison struggles in Spain of him and others against the FIES system and the prison state in general.

DOCU:
COPEL ( Coordinadora de Presos En Lucha )
A tale of rebellion and dignity.

by: Colectivo COPEL 2018
Spanish and Catalan spoken – English subtitles

The best documentary ever made about the prisoners struggle in Spain in the 70’s made by ex members of COPEL, their outside supporters, anarchists, autonomous groups and social movements.

COPEL (Coordinadora de Presos En Lucha) emerged through spontaneous mobilizations by prisoners pushing for the amnesty law of October 1977 to be extended across the prison population; it developed as a rank-and-file body that gave voice and leverage to those excluded from the political process,  and which challenged the State for more than two years, exposing its injustices and the inhumanity of society’s punitive machinery.

This documentary, focusing on Franco’s and post-Francoist’s prisons and the plight of its prisoners, is told by the victims of the regime, activists who lived through those long years of struggle and who are determined to expose the truth about the nature of the regime and its penal system

After the movie there is room for discussion and a drink.

cancelled demo “stop the war against imigrants” 14th of march

Hereby, we inform you that this demonstration is cancelled in its’ original form. As a collective, we don’t know what the risk will be for the people that wil attend the demo. This is why we have decided to not let it go through.

We do understand the concerns people have about the spreading of the Corona virus, but this does not mean we can take away our attention from what’s happening at the borders of Europe, which the mainstream media seems to already have forgotten about.

Refugees stuck on the borderzones of Fortress Europe and on the Greek islands have been living in dire and inhumane circumstances for a long time. These people are already in big risk of becoming ill, and no government cares for them. The first instances of Corona have by now reached a refugee camp on Lesbos.

Corona should not be used as a xenophobic instrument to close the borders and to blame foreigners, such as some fascist governments and media are already doing.

There is already a humanitarian crisis going on in a big part of the world, and even within the confines of the European Union. There is war, climate breakdown, and poverty crisis, and people rightfully so fleeing from this. The poorest and most vulnerable will always be hit hardest and soonest by these crises.

We as social movements have to learn from these kinds of events, because this is not going to be the first and for sure not the last one. We have to find new ways to fight in solidarity with those being affected the most; the poor, the refugees, and the vulnerable. We as radicals will keep standing in solidarity with these groups.

Stop the war on migrants

[English below]

STOP THE WAR ON MIGRANTS

The EU and the Turkish and Greek states have decided to play with human lives. In recent days many immigrants have been attempting to cross the border from Turkey to Greece, but are being violently blocked by Greek security forces. The Greek government has decided to close the borders and keep anyone seeking asylum from getting in the country – with the full support of the EU.

Frontex and the Greek coastguard violently prevent boats from reaching the Greek islands, with one child drowning so far. NGOs and journalists covering the incidents in the islands have been attacked by nationalists, while “angry civilians” and racists have used force to prevent migrants from disembarking from unsafe boats. At the land borders, the military, police forces, armed civilians and fascists have gathered to block immigrants by firing tear gas and even live ammo. Two immigrants have been shot dead so far and several wounded.

Greek mainstream media and the government propagate fake news claiming that this is an “invasion”, the immigrants are criminals and that people should protect their country. The reality is that closing borders creates bottlenecks in the flow of people, which leads to dire circumstances in fewer and fewer border crossings. This media manipulation is done whenever the state wants to create an “enemy” to society. Scapegoating is a tried and true method of using intolerance to keep the status quo unchallenged.

Meanwhile, refugees that are already in Greece live in camps in horrible conditions. The EU granted 700 million euros to the Greek state, much of it being used for military and police operations. All of this money – and much more that ends up in the pockets of those in power – could be used to help migrants safely arrive and settle in Europe. However, building a fortress Europe is a priority to the EU. Whenever the bosses need cheap labour hands, they open the borders to exploit immigrants in every way possible, without giving them rights, and whenever they have enough labour force, they propagate that immigrants are a threat.

Borders kill! The EU and NATO are guilty of war crimes in countries across the Middle East with sanctions and aggression against Iran causing many to flee their homes in search of a better life. The situation in Libya has degraded into chaos after NATO destabilized the country and EU-paid and trained coastguards routinely shoot and kill migrants. The EU has profited from war and previously bribed Turkey to detain those that attempt to flee. Now that the Turkish state has opened the border, the EU can no longer outsource this brutal migrant policy and the Greek state has now become a violent “shield”. Everyone should be accepted, whether they leave their country due to a war or poverty or a repressive state. The earth does not belong to anyone and no one leaves their land for no reason!

Nothing is over yet! Migrants have protested several times over their abysmal treatment in Greece and Europe and those who have not managed to pass the borders are still struggling to do it after all of what they have been through; wars, tortures, violence, hunger, and repressive governments. Their struggle is also our struggle, a social struggle against the exploitation of our lives and for a free society. Struggles which create bonds between us that no authority, no boss, and no power structure can break.

We are angry because the governments are playing with people’s lives. We welcome migrants in our neighbourhoods, our schools, our working places, and in our social struggles. Freedom of movement!

New event: Info night in solidarity with protests in Chile.

Anarchist Group Amsterdam and Joe’s Garage collective are organizing two events in Amsterdam in solidarity with protests in Chile.

Chile is one of the wealthiest and unequal countries in Latin America at the same time. 1% of the population in Chile controls 26.5% of the country’s wealth, while 50% of low-income households access 2.1%.
Despite this fact, in October 2019 the Chilean government decided to increase public transport fares by 4% ignoring its social significance. It led to the protests and the biggest civil unrest having occurred in Chile since the end of Augusto Pinochet’s military dictatorship. People’s demands quickly grew from keeping public transport fares to more broad anti-neoliberal claims. The government replied with Excessive use of force. As of 26 October, 19 people have died, nearly 2,500 have been injured, and 2,840 have been arrested. Human rights organizations have received several reports of violations conducted against protesters, including torture, sexual abuse, and rape. According to Amnesty International, “the intention of the Chilean security forces is clear: to injure demonstrators in order to discourage protest.”. In fact, they didn’t succeed and protests are still happening until the present day.

To learn more about events happening in Chile and express your solidarity please come to our events:

Anarchisme in Indonesië infobijeenkomst

-English below-

adres: Eerste Schinkelstraat 14-16 Amsterdam
Start at 19:00

A anarchist comrade from Indonesia will do the presentation and the talk will be in Indonesian and translated to English.

A short history of the rise of the anarchist movement in Indonesia
Since the 1990s, there has been an interesting rise of the anarchist movement in Indonesia. Even though it’s said to be a new movement, anarchism has strong cultural and historical roots in Indonesia. In the 1990s it rose because of youth being fed up with the pro-democracy generations of the 1980s and a concern about Islamic fundamentalism. We will talk about if, how and why the Indonesian anarchist movement has dealt with the power of the state, corporations, Islam and the nationalist movement.

After the talk the bar will be open for drinks and socializing.
This public meeting is organized by the Anarchist Group Amsterdam / Vrije Bond.

Mental health discussion group

The main focus of the group will be mental health. Specifically mental health struggle under late capitalism. Plan is to make this a regular weekly event. So every other week the topic of discussion will change (depending on the progress). This group is for everybody. We wanted to mention this, because sometimes reading/ hearing words “mental health” can turn off people. Those, who don’t have any mental health issues may think that they have nothing to discuss. Mental health is a very broad term in many ways not connected to medical conditions. And it’s crutial for the goal of the group to have a divers collective. The goal is: gathering knowledge, views and experiences from activists on mental health during late capitalism era. In the process we will also achieve better understanding of one another. Educate each other on variety of topics. Develop ways for creating more emotionally comfortable environment in the group and in the whole community.

Info talk: Solidarity Fund for Prisoners and Persecuted Militants

During the anarchist library on Monday we will have food and we will host ‘tamio’, a self-organised solidarity fund from Greece. The solidarity fund was established in 2010 and to this day they actively organize the ethical, political and material support of prisoners and persecuted militants. They will talk about the political climate related to political prisoners in Greek prisons, the historical timeline of the solidarity fund, what they’ve done, what they are currently busy with and what their future steps will be.

During the talk we will try to host an intervention from former and current political prisoners from Greece. It is important for us to present the solidarity fund and network with other political spaces. Through collaboration we spread the support across borders and connect the struggle inside and outside of the prison walls. Any income from the event will be given to the solidarity fund for the material support of prisoners and persecuted militants.

We hope to see you there!

Solidarity to the squats, the anarchist and social movement in Greece

Since August 2019 a new repression wave began against the squats in Exarchia in Athens and other cities in Greece. Several immigrant and anarchist squats and social centres have been evicted till now. This comes with the dogma of “law and order” from the recently elected new government of the right-wing party “New Democracy”. However, it is just continuing the repression of the previous government led by the leftist party of SYRIZA in another form.

The previous 4.5 years, SYRIZA succeeded to repress the social movements of Greece in a way that no previous government could do it. After “selling” hope to the society that a radical change will come, they applied the same neoliberal policies and austerity measures as the previous ones. This way people got disappointed and the majority stop being active in the radical movements. The same time eviction of squats and the war on those whose voices could not be heard, the immigrants, was happening all those years. So, the new government comes now ready to put an end to all the voices of resistance.

They initially passed a law which abolishes the university asylum, where the police could not enter a university without a permission by the Rector. This was achieved when the rebellion against the dictatorship in Greece began in 17 November 1973. All the next years, the spaces in the universities were a place in which the different movements came together and various parts of society could socialize and get organized there (students, workers, radical leftists, anarchists). In addition, a reform in the education system is coming up to discipline more the students and open a door for the profits of private companies.

Then, the state attacks the immigrants in plenty of ways. Lots of them are dying in the sea trying to pass from Turkey to Greece, those who survive are staying in camps in horrible conditions. Most of them are in the islands in the borders with Turkey, where the facilities are made to host far less people. Others are held in detention centres and police stations (such as in Petrou Ralli, Athens) without any specific accusations waiting for months if they can be transferred in camps or be legalized. Those who dare to rebel are tortured by the police and some are deported violently back to Turkey. The same time, the state evicts the immigrant squats and social centres because they are afraid of a connection of the immigrants with the social movements. All these, come in hand with the EU anti-immigration policies building a fortress Europe.

The squatting and anarchist movement in Greece is one of the few voices which are remaining to resist and rebel against the state repression and the further capitalistic exploitation of the society. The state wants to put an end to such voices. The mainstream media show that the “cleansing” of the radical district of Exarchia in Athens and squats in other cities will be beneficial for the citizens. The authorities turn the public opinion to believe that those who resist and deny the dominant norms of this society are against the society, when in fact they are against the authorities and the power. Thus, those who do not accept the policies of the state will be appeared to be the “garbage” of society that must be cleaned out. The police have also moved drug dealers to the square of Exarchia to show that their presence is required there against any “criminal” activities. The events of the past months showed that the only ones who are struggle against the mafias and drug dealing are the residents and anarchists of Exarchia and the police only attacks the squats.

Similar policies occur in the Netherlands and in Amsterdam. New laws against squatting, gentrification of neighbourhoods with increasing housing rates and a target to commercialise every aspect of our lives. There is also a vast exploitation of immigrant temp workers who come from poorer countries.

Enough is enough! We not only stand with our comrades in Greece, the squatting movement, those who resist, the immigrants, but we fight against all these policies which produce and reproduce the state repression, the capital and power relations, racism and manipulation of the immigrants.
