On Sunday 23 november at 12:00 in room Meis – Plantage Doklaan 8-12 Amsterdam
First we will shortly present the book, and then we give the stage to a long time comrade that is active in the anarchist / anti-authoritarian movement in Greece.
This talk aims to give a brief overview of the evolution of repression in the post-junta period in greece.
From the police operation “virtue” that ended up in the occupation of the Chemisty University in 1985; the first appearance of the anti-terrorist unit and laws that led to the arrest of the armed organization 17N in 2001-02;
The insurrection of 2008, following by the blooming of the anarchist/anti-authoritarian movement and the police equipment and hardening of legal persecutions against it as the the state’s response;
The opening of squats and solidarity kitchens for the refugees amid the war in Syria, followed by the opening of Detention Centers for immigrants throughout greece and the continuing until today repression of the squatting movement; the new penal and correctional codes that are constantly renewed since the end of 2019;
The covid measures that gave the state almost complete control of the public space, up to the point of the events of N. Smyrni and D. Koufontinas’ hunger strike that effectively ended the “state of emergency”.
It is evident that the state is highly interested in augmenting its repressive power over the society in general and the anarchist movement especially. As members of the anarchist/anti-authoritarian movement, we recognize that the need to collectively overcome repression in a day-to-day basis in critical, both to persevere as a movement and to advance our goals.
About the book:
Anarchy in Greece is a compilation of resistance reports on the ground from 2018 onward, providing rare English-language insights into the country’s anarchist movement and the conditions of Greek society around it.
Spanning cities, villages, squats, and prisons, Anarchy in Greece provides a deeper understanding of the circumstances and struggles, historic and current, that helped to create and define the anarchist movement in Greece, and where it finds itself today. All to demystify the movement, to help the reader learn from its strengths, and to better hone international solidarity efforts.
Most importantly, proceeds from the sale of the book by all its publishers and distributors will be donated to the anti-repression and solidarity group, Tameio: The Solidarity Fund for Imprisoned and Persecuted Revolutionaries in Greece. Tameio has worked for years to offer consistent, various critical solidarity efforts for revolutionaries on trial or experiencing long-term imprisonment.
